The West African Examinations Council has released the results for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates, 2024.
The results were made available to candidates on Monday.
The examination body disclosed this in a post on X.
The message read, “The West African Examinations Council is pleased to inform candidates who sat WASSCE for school candidates, 2024 that the result has officially been released today, Monday, August 12, 2024.”
Similarly, in a Monday statement, WAEC’s Head of Nigeria Organisation, Amos Dangut, stated that the exam which was the first conducted under his term was a success.
Dangut said, “Gentlemen of the media, the conduct of the WASSCE for school candidates, 2024, the first conducted under my administration, was a huge success. Meanwhile, after my assumption of office, WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2023-Second Series and the novel computer-based WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2024-First Series were successfully conducted.”
He stated that the results of 1,685,889 candidates, accounting for 93.9 per cent were released.
Dangut added that although insecurity hampered the conduct of the exam in different areas of the country, 1,805, 216 candidates registered for the WASSCE.
“WAEC is releasing its results today as out of 1,805, 216 that entered for the exam, 1,332, 089 candidates have credits in five subjects including any subjects with either Mathematics or English language and 1,301, 949 candidates got credits in five subjects including Mathematics and English language accounting for 72.9% of total candidates.
“This is a 7.6 per cent decrease in examination performance compared to last year of 2023 WASSCE. Also 215, 267 results were withheld due to examination malpractice by the candidates. This accounts for 11.92% of the total number of candidates who wrote the examination,” Dangut said.
PUNCH Online reports that the examination spanned a period of seven weeks and six days from April 30 to June 24, 2024.
Also, the coordination of examiners and marking of candidates’ scripts took place from July 10 to July 29 across 86 traditional marking venues nationwide.
The WAEC boss also highlighted four challenges encountered around the conduct of the examination.
According to the statement, they are security concerns, non-adherence to registration deadlines, financial issues/inflation and rogue website operators/shameless connivance of some supervisors.
Meanwhile, PUNCH Online reported that WAEC withheld the results of 215,267 candidates from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
