14,575 cooks hired to feed 1.2m pupils, says FG

Buhari’s School Feeding Programme now feeds 1.2million pupils a day. Above a cook takes care of the kids

About  N3. 7 billion has been released for the feeding of 1, 287, 270  pupils in nine states and over 14,500 cooks hired under the HomeGrown School Feeding Programme , a Social Investment Programme of the Buhari presidency.

The benefiting states are Anambra, Enugu, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ebonyi, Zamfara, Delta and Abia.

So far, Anambra has received N693 million and Enugu, N419million.

Oyo State has collected N414million, Ogun N880million, Osun N767million and Ebonyi N344million.

Zamfara had received N188million, Delta,  N63million and Abia, N42million. The three states are late joiners of the feeding programme, which government hopes to extend to 3 million pupils soon.

The money is paid directly from the FG’s coffers to the cooks, with a slight variation in Osun State where some of the food items like eggs are bought centrally by an aggregator.

Laolu Akande, a spokesman for the Acting President said the nine states have hired 14, 574 cooks in the communities were the schools are located.

 Anambra hired 1,009 cooks,  Enugu  1,276 and Oyo 1,372 cooks. Osun has  2, 863 cooks, Ogun  2, 205 and  Ebonyi 1, 453 cooks.

In Zamfara state 2,738 cooks were engaged under the programme while Delta hired  908 cooks and Abia  750.
