Earlier, at a similar budget defense session with the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education on Friday, February 10, 2017, the University of Ilorin was singled out for commendation by the Committee Chairman, Senator Jubril Barau, who lauded Prof. Ambali’s submission as “well-detailed” and described the quantum of the University’s internally generated revenue of N2.5 billion in the 2016 financial year as “highly impressive”.

The Committee Chairman, Hon Suleiman stated that the affected universities were cleared based on the recommendations of the Sub Committee that scrutinized the submissions and documents presented by the institutions.

According to Hon. Suleiman, “these universities responded promptly to our invitation, we then set up a sub-committee that went through their submissions and their submissions were satisfactory. So, there is no need keeping them here. We have to allow them to go and attend to other matters.”

The Committee assured the university administrators of adequate funding in the 2017 budget but advised them to devote more funds for their researches and teaching and spend less on tours and travels, electricity, purchase of diesel, repairs and overhead cost generally.

It also urged the universities to ensure strict compliance with the federal character policy of the Federal Government in the area of staff recruitment and frowned at the case of one of the universities where only 21 states had representation out of the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, saying that such a practice would no longer be tolerated in the country.

In their presentations, most of the university administrators complained of lack of adequate funding of the institutions and pleaded for the immediate intervention of the lawmakers through improvement of their budgetary allocation in the 2017 budget proposal to enable them meet their obligation.
