BARELY three weeks after two girls were killed, 77 houses and 20 motorcycles were burnt in a fire disaster that occurred from fuel tanker explosion in Kudu town in Mokwa local government of Niger state, the state government is yet to respond to the distress calls of the victims.

The lawmaker representing Mokwa constituency at the Niger state House of Assembly, Honourable Mohammed Baiwa Mohammed, stated this while explaining that the incident occurred on January 23, 2018.

The lawmaker in a motion of matter of urgent public importance expressed concern over the inability of the state government and the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) to respond to the plight of the people and provide relief materials to ameliorate the sufferings of the victims of the incident.

He also lamented that about 10 sewing machines were engulfed by the inferno adding that the town has also been thrown into darkness due to collapse of electricity supply since the incident.

He said:, “it is disheartened that prior to the incident of 23rdJanuary 2018, the town has experienced similar incident four times”, adding that in 2012, a similar incident claimed 40 lives at the same spot.

Mohammed said that he was worried that the state Emergency Management Agency has not visited the scene of the incident to assess the extent of damages and provide relief materials to the victims.

In a three point prayers which were adopted by the Assembly, honourable Mohammed implored the state government to provide relief materials immediately to the victims and liaise with relevant authorities to restore electricity to the town in addition to construction of speed breakers on that portion of the road to prevent more accidents.
