7 million PVCs uncollected nationwide –INEC
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has said that over seven million Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), have not been collected nationwide by their owners.
Alhaji Mohammed Haruna, INEC National Commissioner, made this known on Monday in Ilorin while speaking with journalists on the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).
The National Commissioner in charge of North Central was in Kwara to access the level of the CVR exercise.
Haruna said that the Commission will do everything to ensure that all the PVCs were collected by their owners before the 2019 general elections in the country.
He also disclosed that a total of 239, 000 PVCs were yet to be collected in Kwara.
The Commissioner added that before the end of April, all PVCs registered from 2017 will be ready for collection.
“Before commencement of 2019 general elections, all these PVC will be ready; our problem is collection because we don’t facility for distribution.
“We have close to eight million uncollected PVCs across the country, this is not nice to disenfranchise over seven million voters,” Haruna added.
Haruna said INEC has put some steps in place to ensure that people collect their PVCs.
Haruna said registration of voters would be rotated among wards during which PVCs that were ready would be taken to such wards where people will check for their PVCs.
The National Commissioner therefore appealed to people that have registered since the commencement of the CVR to check their registration centers for their PVC.
He expressed concern over the congestion of prospective voters wishing to register in Ilorin West Local Government, adding that the Commission will do everything to decongest the queues.
According to the Commissioner, INEC has procured and distributed new Direct Data Capturing machines (DDC) to all the 36b states of the federation and Abuja to ease registration of voters.
Haruna said 10 DDC machines were allocated to Kwara, adding that Ilorin West Local Government was allocated one to decongest the registration procedure.
INEC Electoral Officer in Ilorin West, Alhaji Abu Oman Uffene, had earlier appealed to the National Commissioner for another DDC machine to reduce crowd of people wishing to register.
He said Ilorin West, being a metropolitan local government was the most populous in the state, hence the usual regular influx of prospective voters.
