Babangida, fondly called IBB, was born on August 17, 1941 and ruled Nigeria as military president from August 27, 1985 to August 26, 1993.
He took over power from the then Head of State, Major General Muhammadu Buhari through a bloodless coup d’etat and reigned for eight years until his resignation as a result of the pressure from his annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election presumed to have been won by the Social Democratic Party, SDP candidate, Bashorun Moshood Abiola.
The former military president has generally been commended for his achievements in the areas of infrastructure, agriculture and other sectors of the economy while in office
