The Ogun State Government has announced that the burial of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, will take place today, Monday, July 14, 2025.
In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, the final burial rites are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Ogbagba Court in Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode.
Oba Adetona, who reigned for over six decades, died on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 91.
The government urged residents to offer prayers for the late monarchβs family and reflect on his contributions to Ijebuland and Nigeria as a whole.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a tribute on Sunday, described Oba Adetona as one of Nigeriaβs most esteemed traditional rulers, praising his 65-year reign marked by service, dignity, and commitment to progress.
βHis leadership brought lasting unity and development to Ijebuland and served as a model across the country,β Tinubu stated.
He also highlighted the monarchβs role as a stabilizing figure in moments of national crisis and commended his lifelong dedication to education and good governance.
Oba Adetona, installed as Awujale in 1960, was one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Nigeria, widely respected for his progressive views and advocacy for constitutional reform.
His passing marks the end of a historic era in Ijebuland and leaves behind a legacy that has shaped traditional leadership in the modern Nigerian context.
