The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has praised the Abia State Government for launching the Abia State Security Trust Fund, describing it as a significant step toward improving homeland security.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, the group welcomed the initiative but raised concerns over rising cases of cult-related violence and other social vices across the state.
FENRAD urged the government to enhance the existing security architecture, particularly community policing, to effectively address the evolving security threats facing local communities.
Nwafor emphasized that criminal elements are exploiting lapses in intelligence gathering and communication. He called for a comprehensive review of the personnel structure, recruitment processes, and welfare of local vigilante groups.
He also noted that increasing youth involvement in crime, inter-community disputes, and cult activity in schools and neighborhoods highlight the urgency of reinforcing grassroots security mechanisms.
FENRAD advised that traditional rulers, youth leaders, and community stakeholders work closely with security agencies to establish early-warning systems that enable timely intelligence sharing.
The Abia State Security Trust Fund was officially launched last Thursday in Umuahia. It aims to provide financial and logistical support to security agencies in their efforts to combat crime and dismantle criminal networks.
FENRAD concluded by reaffirming its commitment to supporting security reforms in the state and encouraged collaborative strategies to safeguard residents and maintain peace.
