Aliyu Saulawa, former Director of Media for the Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organisation and National Coordinator of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Movement, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Saulawa made the announcement on Sunday in Katsina, joining a wave of high-profile defections ahead of the 2027 general elections. Addressing journalists, he strongly criticized the APC’s performance, particularly in northern Nigeria.
“The APC has not fulfilled even one per cent of its campaign promises,” Saulawa said. “In the Northwest, we rely on farming and trade, but insecurity has crippled livelihoods. Education is collapsing. I cannot continue with the APC.”
The mass defection occurred during the formal inauguration of the ADC’s Katsina State chapter at the Continental Event Centre. The event, led by prominent political figure Dr. Mustapha Inuwa, saw hundreds of former members of the APC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) switch allegiance to the ADC.
Defectors from all 34 local government areas of Katsina State, including women and youth from various backgrounds, were issued ADC membership cards. The move was described by party leaders as a response to growing dissatisfaction with the current political leadership.
Lawal Batagarawa, a representative of the National Political Coalition Group, blamed worsening insecurity, inflation, and economic collapse for the shift. “The Naira keeps falling, and multiple industries have folded since the Tinubu administration came into power in 2023,” he said, urging citizens to unite behind the ADC.
ADC’s Katsina State Chairman, Usman Musa Wamba, welcomed the new members and expressed confidence in the party’s chances in 2027. “With your support, especially from the youth, we will bring the true dividends of democracy to Katsina and Nigeria,” he said, pledging transparency and competent leadership.
