Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has called for calm following viral videos showing some Ghanaians demanding the deportation of Nigerians from their country.

Speaking during a joint press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, the minister downplayed fears, stating there was no widespread unrest or immediate threat to Nigerians living in Ghana.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu said her visit to Ghana was prompted by the anxiety caused by the viral content, but noted that upon arrival, she did not witness any protests, street demonstrations, or acts of violence targeting Nigerians.

“So far, I have not seen people burning tyres in the streets or carrying placards demanding the deportation of Nigerians,” she said.

She commended the Ghanaian government and President Nana Akufo-Addo for stepping in to de-escalate tensions, describing their intervention as effective.

“There’s no cause for alarm. They are handling the situation effectively, and we will continue engaging stakeholders. We have met with some of the leaders and individuals involved in a bid to de-escalate tensions,” she added.

The minister assured Nigerian citizens in Ghana of the government’s commitment to their safety and encouraged continued dialogue between both countries.
