The Kwara State Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, has alerted farmers and residents in flood-prone communities to take urgent precautionary measures following a warning by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), as reported by a national newspaper on 8th August 2025.
NIHSA forecasts possible flooding in parts of Kwara State between 7th and 21st August, 2025, according to a statement signed by the
Press Secretary of the Ministry, Ashaolu Omotola.
The Agency identified several communities in the State among 832 nationwide locations at risk of flooding during this period.
The anticipated flooding could disrupt transportation routes and threaten farmlands, crops, and livestock.
The Ministry cautions that flooding poses a significant risk to agricultural production and food security across the State.
Farmers are urged to harvest ready crops promptly, relocate livestock, farm machinery, and inputs to safer, elevated areas, and ensure proper maintenance of drainage channels on their farms to allow efficient drainage.
Agricultural extension officers remain available to support farmers and protect agricultural assets and livelihoods throughout this time.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant, follow safety advisories, and prepare community evacuation plans where necessary.
The Ministry also encourages residents to stay updated through official channels and reiterates its commitment to supporting the community throughout this period.
