Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has shared his predictions for some of the opening Premier League fixtures this weekend, as the competition returns after a three-month break.
The new season kicks off on Friday night, with defending champions Liverpool hosting Bournemouth at Anfield. Five matches will follow on Saturday, before Arsenal face Manchester United in Sundayβs headline clash.
Speaking to BetFair, Shearer backed Liverpool to start strongly despite their Community Shield loss.
βLiverpool vs Bournemouth β I know Liverpool were disappointing in the Community Shield, but Iβd guess Anfield will be rocking again, so Iβll go for a home win. Prediction: Liverpool win.β
On Wolvesβ home fixture against Manchester City, the Premier Leagueβs all-time top scorer predicted a win for Pep Guardiolaβs side.
βWolves have lost a couple of big-hitters, and I think Man City will go there and take the points. Prediction: Man City win.β
For Chelseaβs clash with Crystal Palace, Shearer opted for a draw, citing the visitorsβ competitive sharpness and the Bluesβ recent signings.
βCrystal Palace have already been in competitive action, even though it went to penalties, so they may be in better condition than Chelsea. But with Chelsea at home and their new players, Iβll go for a draw. Prediction: Draw.
Looking ahead to Manchester United vs Arsenal, Shearer described the encounter as a treat for fans so early in the season.
βItβs wonderful to watch two giants go head-to-head so early. Tough one to call, but Iβll go for a draw. Prediction: Draw.β
