Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia returned to winning ways on Thursday with a convincing 2-0 victory over reigning champions Remo Stars in a rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fixture at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
The result comes just four days after the Warriors’ disappointing exit from the CAF Confederation Cup, where they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Djoliba of Mali.
Forward Emeka Obioma opened the scoring in the first half, before stand-in captain Sunday Megwo sealed the win from the penalty spot in the second half.
Remo Stars pressed harder after the break and nearly equalised in the 53rd minute, but Warriors’ goalkeeper Okiemute Odah pulled off a stunning point-blank save to deny them. Their hopes of a comeback were dashed when Megwo converted from 12 yards after Suraj Lawal was fouled in the box.
Speaking after the match, jubilant Abia Warriors fans hailed the team for bouncing back against the champions, describing the victory as “a fitting consolation” following their Confederation Cup exit.
The win handed Remo Stars their second defeat of the season, while giving the Warriors renewed confidence as the NPFL campaign intensifies.
