The Presidency has cautioned human rights activist Omoyele Sowore against using street protests to influence ongoing judicial proceedings, particularly the case involving the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, issued the warning on Monday, emphasizing that justice must be sought in courtrooms, not through public demonstrations or agitation.
Reacting to the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest led by Sowore in Abuja, Dare described the move as “counterproductive and inimical to the rule of law.”
“Protests, threats, attempts at mob actions, and inflammatory rhetoric do not aid the judicial process. Instead, they hinder it, creating unnecessary tension and undermining the rule of law,” he stated in a post on his verified X handle.
The presidential aide stressed that those demanding Kanu’s release should allow the legal process to take its course, noting that the IPOB leader’s case predates President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“You cannot employ protest and civil unrest to demand the release of someone accused of terrorism and whose case is still in court. Not even in America,” Dare added.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s stance that all matters before the courts must be determined within the confines of the law, without external pressure or political interference.
