Rivers Assembly Lawmakers Reverse Decision, Resume Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara

Date:

Four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who had earlier withdrawn from the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara have reversed their decision.

The lawmakers—Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo (Omuma Constituency), Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency), Deputy Minority Leader Barile Nwakoh (Khana I), and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor II)—had initially stepped back and appealed to colleagues to halt the impeachment process.

However, during a press conference on Friday, the four lawmakers stated that the governor had not given any reason for them to maintain their withdrawal, prompting them to resume support for the impeachment.

In the same briefing, members of the House of Assembly confirmed that they would proceed with the impeachment of Governor Fubara, arguing that his removal, along with that of the deputy governor, is necessary to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the state.

The move comes amid an ongoing political standoff between Governor Fubara and the Rivers State Assembly, which has dominated state politics in recent months.
