The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Works, has announced a six-week partial closure of the LagosāIbadan Expressway to carry out urgent repairs on the expansion joints at Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and Arepo-Punch Bridge. The closure aims to resume critical rehabilitation works previously suspended on the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge.
Ogun State Federal Controller of Works, Michael Komolafe, apologised for the inconvenience and assured motorists that enhanced traffic management measures would be implemented to ensure safe and efficient repairs. He noted that deteriorating expansion joints on the three bridges had posed significant safety risks and contributed to traffic accidents.
The contractor overseeing the project, Andy Duan of CBC Construction Company, stated that repair works on the Lagos-bound sections of Magboro and Arepo-Punch bridges had been completed, with attention now shifting to the Ibadan-bound sides. He added that half of the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge had been repaired, and work on the remaining portion would commence immediately.
Duan emphasised that each bridge would be repaired in phases, with half of each expansion joint expected to be completed within a week. Traffic safety will be prioritised through the use of barriers, warning signs, and lights to protect both motorists and workers during the construction period.
The Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kehinde Hamzat, urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations and exercise patience. He highlighted that the repairs were necessary to address hazardous expansion joints, which had caused accidents, particularly on Kara Bridge, and warned that violators of traffic rules during the construction would face sanctions.
