The trial of 11 individuals accused of killing ARISE News journalist Somtochukwu Maduagwu was stalled Tuesday at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Jabi, Abuja. The hearing could not proceed because Kuje prison authorities failed to convey the defendants to court, despite trial dates having been set for February 9, 10, and 12, 2026.
Prosecution counsel Adama Musa expressed frustration, saying prison officials claimed they were unaware of the scheduled trial date. Although the defendants’ lawyers were present in court, the absence of the accused forced Justice Mohammed Idris to adjourn the proceedings.
Justice Idris urged witnesses to remain available for the continuation of the trial and directed that a hearing notice be issued to Kuje Correctional Services to ensure the defendants are produced in court for future sessions. The judge emphasized the importance of the defendants’ presence for the interests of justice.
The accused were initially arraigned on January 21, 2026, following a violent robbery attack at Unique Apartments in Katampe Extension, Abuja, on September 29, 2025. The attack claimed the lives of Maduagwu and a security guard, Danlami, and sparked widespread concern over safety in the area.
