ISWAP Commander Killed in Friendly Fire, Factional Tensions Rise in Borno”

Date:

Confusion and tension have erupted within a faction of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) following the death of a senior commander, reportedly killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by members of his own group in Borno State. The incident occurred on February 24 along the Lake Chad Basin axis, a region where insurgent factions remain active.

The deceased commander, identified as Amir Musa, was confronted by a unit intelligence member over the recent deaths of two fighters, Abu Nazir and Abu Kasim. Abu Kasim, also a senior commander, reportedly died when an IED planted by his faction detonated along a route where he was operating.

Abu Nazir is alleged to have been killed by fellow ISWAP members following an encounter with Boko Haram fighters, who were suspected to have been involved in Abu Kasim’s earlier death. Sources say the series of events has fueled allegations of friendly fire, operational lapses, and mistrust within the insurgent camp.

The development highlights ongoing rivalries between ISWAP and Boko Haram (Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad), despite both groups originating from the same insurgent movement. Analysts say these internal rifts could weaken ISWAP’s operational cohesion at a time when Nigerian security forces are conducting sustained offensives in the North-East.

Security sources warn that infighting and breakdowns in coordination could undermine the group’s effectiveness, creating opportunities for counterterrorism operations. The incident underscores the volatile and fragmented nature of insurgent factions operating in Borno State and the wider Lake Chad Basin.
