A growing number of Nigerians living abroad are increasingly turning to locally made clothing and accessories, reversing a long-standing preference for foreign brands. In the past, both Nigerians at home and in the diaspora placed higher value on imported fashion, often overlooking locally produced items, but that trend is now shifting significantly.
Findings show that many Nigerians overseas now purchase clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories from Nigeria and have them shipped abroad. This change is largely driven by the high cost of living in countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States, where fashion items are significantly more expensive compared to prices in Nigeria.
Some diaspora Nigerians say the price difference is substantial enough to influence their shopping habits. For instance, a single pair of jeans abroad can cost the equivalent of over ₦150,000, while the same amount can purchase multiple quality items in Nigeria. As a result, many now rely on Nigerian merchants for more affordable options.
Local business owners are also benefiting from this shift, with some reporting a steady rise in international orders. Boutique operators say they now regularly receive requests from customers abroad and assist with packaging and shipping goods, marking a surprising turnaround from earlier years when foreign goods dominated consumer preferences.
Despite logistical challenges such as unreliable shipping services, many diaspora Nigerians consider the process worthwhile due to the cost savings and convenience. The trend reflects a broader shift toward more practical spending habits, as individuals balance financial responsibilities both abroad and back home.
