UK Returnee Dies in Road Crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Date:

A woman who had just returned from the United Kingdom to attend a wedding in Abeokuta has died in a road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, authorities confirmed.

According to a statement on Tuesday from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the crash occurred around 6 p.m. on Monday at the Christopher University section of the expressway.

Akinbiyi said the victim, traveling with two others in a white Toyota Camry, collided with a moving truck. The impact resulted in the death of the female UK returnee, while the other occupants — a male and a female — sustained injuries.

“Three people were involved, including a male and two females. One female died, while the two others sustained injuries,” he said, adding that preliminary investigations indicate the Camry was traveling at excessive speed.

The agency noted that the deceased’s body has been deposited at the Redeemed Hospital morgue, while the injured were taken to Famobis Hospital and Redeemed Hospital for treatment.

Akinbiyi urged motorists to avoid overspeeding, warning that excessive speed remains a major cause of fatal accidents on the highway.

TRACE also highlighted that this accident occurred just three months after a similar crash involving world boxing champion Anthony Joshua and a friend on the same section of the expressway, underscoring ongoing safety concerns.
