Central Bank of Nigeria Alerts Public on Fake Emails Targeting Bank Accounts

Date:

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned Nigerians about a rise in fraudulent emails, messages, and online communications being used to deceive people and gain unauthorised access to bank accounts.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi-Ali, the apex bank said the scam messages are designed to mislead recipients, steal sensitive information, and spread false claims about the bank’s leadership and operations.

The CBN explained that the fraudulent communications often prompt users to click suspicious links and disclose confidential details under the guise of official directives, with the aim of hacking personal accounts.

The bank stressed that its only official website is www.cbn.gov.ng and advised Nigerians to always verify information through authorised channels while avoiding unverified links or sharing personal and financial data on questionable platforms.

It further urged the public to report suspicious messages to law enforcement agencies and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cybersecurity systems in collaboration with security agencies to combat digital financial crimes.
