The prosecution in the trial of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has explained to a Federal High Court why the defendant was moved from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to the Department of State Services (DSS), citing security and public order concerns.
Prosecuting counsel, Oluwole Aladedoye (SAN), told the court on Tuesday that the relocation followed alleged unruly conduct by some members of El-Rufai’s family, including livestreamed claims that he was being denied basic welfare, as well as public statements suggesting he could be harmed in custody.
He further alleged that the situation was worsened by public commentary from individuals, including politician Timi Frank, which raised fears of potential danger and contributed to the decision to move El-Rufai to DSS custody to prevent further escalation.
Aladedoye also accused members of the defendant’s family of using media platforms to attack the prosecution and judiciary, including visits to DSS headquarters and public criticism of bail conditions. He urged the court to caution them, describing the actions as attempts to influence public opinion.
During proceedings, the court admitted several pieces of evidence, including a video recording of El-Rufai’s television interview and witness statements linked to the case. The matter, involving allegations of phone interception involving the National Security Adviser, was adjourned to June 22 and 23 for continuation of hearing.
