Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has proposed a constitutional amendment that would limit Nigerian presidents and governors to a single six-year term in office. He said the move is aimed at reducing the distractions associated with re-election campaigns and improving governance.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday, Bamidele disclosed that the proposed legislation would be among his top priorities in the next Senate after the 2027 general elections. According to him, the current two-term system often pushes elected leaders to focus on political survival shortly after assuming office.
The lawmaker argued that a fixed six-year tenure would allow leaders to concentrate fully on delivering their mandates without worrying about second-term ambitions. He said office holders would be encouraged to give their best from the beginning, knowing they have only one opportunity to serve.
Bamidele acknowledged that the proposal may attract mixed reactions but stressed that constitutional reforms are necessary for democratic growth. He maintained that Parliament has a responsibility to review and amend laws in response to changing national realities.
If passed by the National Assembly, the bill would require extensive constitutional amendments and approval by at least two-thirds of state Houses of Assembly before it can become law. The proposal is expected to reignite debate over executive tenure and governance in Nigeria.
