Drivers operating in Gombe State and environs have been taken to task on the need for safety throughout the ember months and beyond.
They were also encouraged to submit to free alcohol test.
Ember months are the period covering the last four months of the year, which commences from September and extends till December, and usually characterised by high volume of human and vehicular traffic.
Speaking during the launch of the campaign with the theme ‘Maintain safe speed, avoid night travels and enjoy quality road experience,’ Gombe Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Ishaku Ibrahim, explained the reason for the ’ember months campaign’, saying it’s a period that is prone to accidents “resulting from intense human and vehicular movements.”
“The campaign aims at educating and enlightening the public on the need to drive safe by obeying rules and regulations guiding safety on our roads.”
According to him, part of the activities of the campaign include conducting motor park rallies, public education in Mosque and Churches, and general preventive enforcement of traffic regulation.
He said, “With focus on overloading, speed limit, tyre and light signal violation, use of phone while driving, seat belt, Driver licence, and route violation among others.
“I want to appreciate the State Government and all the stakeholders for supporting the FRSC in the state to be able to carry out their constitutional responsibility of ensuring safety on the roads.”
Declaring the campaign open, Gombe Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Jatau, warned motorists to maintain safe speed and obey all traffic rules for quality road experience.
The Deputy Governor who is also the Chairman state Advisory Council on Road Safety commended the sector for embarking on the campaign, adding that it would enlighten and educate the people on the need to be cautious and drive safe.
He said, “Safety is everybody’s business, Gombe State Government is a critical stakeholder and as such will continue to partner FRSC and other stakeholders in safety business.Adding that the State Government buys into any advice proffered by the Federal abroad Safety Corps and act on with immediate effect because the safety of its citizens is of a topmost priority.”
Jatau further called on the motorists and all road users to support the FRSC, by obeying all the traffic rules for their own safety and safety of others.
