Lecturers at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), have commenced an indefinite strike to protest the non-payment of their salaries and arrears. The action began last Thursday, following a Congress meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which formally notified the university management of the decision.
The strike has disrupted academic and social activities on campus, leaving students expressing mixed reactions over the development. In a letter signed by ASUU-AAUA Chairperson Boluwaji Oshodi and Secretary Olusegun Taiwo, the lecturers stated that they would not resume work until all outstanding salaries and arrears are fully cleared.
“We write on behalf of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Adekunle Ajasin University branch, to notify you of the withdrawal of services by our members. This is in line with the resolution of the Congress on Thursday, August 21, 2025, over the non-payment of our salaries and arrears. Our members have been directed to withdraw from all academic activities until all outstanding payments are made,” the letter addressed to the university authority read.
Confirming the letter, Oshodi said the lecturers had sent repeated requests to both the university and state government for payment. “We have written several letters and given multiple warnings, but the main problem remains insufficient funding from the state government. As of now, we are owed two months’ salaries for July and August, in addition to arrears, promotion entitlements, and other obligations running into billions of naira. Until these are addressed, we will not return,” he said.
Efforts to reach the university’s spokesperson, Victor Akinpelumi, were unsuccessful. However, Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, refuted claims that the government had neglected the institution. He stated that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration has consistently released monthly subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions, including AAUA, and assured that steps are being taken to engage the striking lecturers to resolve the crisis.
