ABACHA LOOTS….. FG, Swiss govt, World Bank to meet

Late Gen. Sanni Abacha

The Federal Government, Switzerland and the World Bank are collaborating on a forum for stakeholders on the funds recovered from former Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

According to a statement by Babatunde Ajala, spokesman for the Swiss embassy in Nigeria, the forum, which holds at the embassy tomorrow, will enhance understanding of both the asset repatriation process and how the returned assets will be deployed.

Stakeholders expected at the venue include: civil society, the media, United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC), donor organizations, relevant embassies and other key stakeholders.

The Nigerian Government had at the Global Forum on Asset Recovery (GFAR), which took place in December 2017, signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding which culminated in the repatriation of the $320 million which was illicitly taken away from Nigeria by late General Sani Abacha.

“That historic event has since attracted significant reportage, with quite a number of media articles and stakeholders, especially from civil society betraying a palpable lack of understanding of both the asset repatriation process and how the returned assets will be deployed,” he said.
