The family of the late activist, Abiodun Aremu, has postponed his burial to October 23, 2025, following an agreement with the Labour Movement to allow adequate time for mobilisation and a befitting farewell. Aremu, aged 65, who served as the Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF)—a coalition of pro-labour civil society groups—died on Sunday, October 12, after being hit by a vehicle while crossing the road near his home in Ota, Ogun State. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel attempted to revive him, but he was later pronounced dead.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Nigeria Labour Movement, Owei Lakemfa, former Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) and ex-Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), confirmed the new burial date. He stated that the interment would now hold on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Number 30, Kabiru Fatoye Street, opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop, Ifo Road, along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway. Lakemfa added that the adjustment was necessary to enable the labour movement and Aremu’s comrades to pay their last respects to the late activist in a dignified manner.
Lakemfa described Aremu as “one of the greatest revolutionaries and internationalists of our time,” highlighting his immense contributions to the Nigerian labour struggle. He recalled Aremu’s leadership roles in the Labour–Civil Society Coalition (LASCO) and the Kolagbodi Memorial Foundation, as well as his establishment of the Amilcar Cabral Ideological School (ACIS-M), which aimed to train and inspire young revolutionaries to pursue social change.
Aremu also served as the Secretary of both the Nigeria Movement for the Liberation of Western Sahara and the Nigerian Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, earning him international recognition, including the prestigious Friendship Medal from the Cuban government. Lakemfa noted that the best way to honour Aremu’s legacy is by continuing his lifelong struggle for justice, equality, and social transformation, describing him as a fearless teacher and a true servant of humanity.
