ADC Inaugurates 22-Member Committee to Review Party Constitution

Date:

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has inaugurated a 22-member Constitution Review Committee aimed at strengthening internal democracy, discipline, and party administration. The ceremony took place on Thursday at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, described the party’s constitution as central to its growth and direction, calling it a guide that “regulates our internal processes and safeguards internal democracy.” He emphasized that the review is necessary to align the party’s operations with global democratic standards and ensure “clarity, fairness, inclusiveness, and accountability in our structures and processes.” Mark urged the committee to engage members at all levels, respect the party’s founding values, and produce a constitution that promotes unity, discipline, and transparency.

The committee is chaired by Etigwe Uwa, SAN, and includes notable figures such as Barrister Aishatu Dan-Kani, Professor Lawal Salihu, former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha, and Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, E.Y. Orker-Jev, and Idris Abdullahi Umar. Its mandate is to review the existing constitution, identify areas for improvement, and ensure alignment with democratic best practices, electoral laws, and the Nigerian Constitution. Uwa stated that the review aims to strengthen inclusiveness, transparency, party primaries, congresses, discipline, and dispute resolution, with special focus on women, youths, and persons with disabilities. He assured that the committee would deploy all necessary resources to enhance the constitution, not replace it, noting that a stronger constitution would protect the party from internal crises and ensure fair leadership selection.
