AFCON 1980 Hero Kadiri Ikhana battles for life in Edo hospital

Date:

Kadiri Ikhana, a former Super Eagles defender and 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, is currently in critical condition and receiving emergency medical treatment at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Auchi, Edo State.

The 68-year-old, who was part of Nigeria’s historic Green Eagles squad that won the country’s first AFCON title in Lagos 44 years ago, was rushed to the facility for intensive care and blood transfusion after his health reportedly deteriorated over the weekend.

The development was confirmed by former Nigeria captain Segun Odegbami, who disclosed that Ikhana’s condition worsened, prompting his transfer to the specialist hospital. Meanwhile, Austin Braimoh, former Chairman of the South-South Police Service Commission, has reportedly been covering the medical expenses.

Affectionately known as “Kawawa,” Ikhana was a stalwart defender for both Bendel Insurance FC and the national team during the late 1970s and early 1980s. After retiring from active football, he transitioned into coaching and became one of the most decorated managers in Nigerian domestic football history, winning league titles and nurturing a generation of young talent.

In recognition of his service to the nation, he was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and later served as an ambassador for Air Peace, contributing to sports promotion efforts in the country.

His deteriorating condition has renewed calls for stronger welfare provisions for retired Nigerian footballers, many of whom have struggled with health and financial challenges post-retirement. The news follows the recent death of another Super Eagles icon, Peter Rufai, aged 61, who passed away after a brief illness.

The football community is rallying for urgent support and intervention to save the life of a man widely regarded as a pillar of Nigeria’s football legacy.
