Poverty: China, Africa meet on poverty reduction

By Lawal Saleh

More than 50 African countries and China have gathered in Addis Ababa to share experiences on prosperity and poverty reduction.

The brain-storming holding at the African Union headquarters was organised on the platform of Africa-China High Level Dialogue and Think Tanks Forum.

The event was flagged-off by the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, on Wednesday.

He assured African countries of China’s continued commitment to strengthen the existing mutually beneficial cooperation in order to assist the continent and its people achieve independent and sustainable development.

Wang stated that no fewer than 400 million people still live under the poverty line in Africa.

“China and Africa need to join hands in fighting poverty and achieving development,’’ he said.

He said that the leadership of Communist Party of China had stuck to the reform and opening up policy which have “managed to lift more than 700 million of its people since 1978’’.

With China’s achievements in conquering poverty, he said the country was willing to share its experiences with Africa on poverty reduction.

He informed the gathering that Chinese President Xi Jinping had earlier announced 10 major cooperation plans for Africa during the Johannesburg Forum On China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit.

He explained that poverty reduction was one of the core plans adopted.

In his response, the African Union Chairperson, Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, said that Africa and China have been enjoying varied and multifaceted strategic cooperation in the development of Africa’s infrastructure development, including energy, agriculture and human capacity building.

Mahamat added that China’s success story in poverty reduction was substantially a good lesson that Africa’s to learn from.

The event was co-sponsored by the African Union Leadership Academy and China Mission to the African Union in Addis Ababa in conjunction with Zhejiang Normal University of China. (NAN)
