Babafemi said the pharmaceutical opioids were seized at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja, Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) Abuja and Edo state, respectively.

He said the operation was carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS).

“This is in addition to the seizure of 85 boxes of dried Khat leaves with a total weight of 1,327.35kg at Customs at the NDLEA MMIA Command as a symbol of the synergy between the two law enforcement agencies.

“In Abuja, around 228,740 tablets and capsules of Tramadol and Exol 5 were intercepted on Friday April 1 in the Abaji area of the FCT. The truck carrying the drugs was loaded in Lagos in the direction of Kano.

“Although the truck driver escaped into the bushes during the search of the vehicle, two of his assistants; Usman Abdulmumini, 23, and Aminu Ahmad, 22, were arrested,” he said.

Meanwhile, three drug stores were raided in Wire Road, Benin City and Uromi Town in Edo’s Esan Central LGA, where 188 pinches of cocaine and heroin were recovered with five suspects arrested.

Babafemi said Harrison Odion, a dealer in patent medicines, was arrested with 70 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup in another raid in Okada city, Edo state.

He said 9,638 Tramadol capsules; 16,843 Exol-5 tablets; 80 diazepam tablets and 62 ampoules of injectable diazepam were seized.

It added that NDLEA operatives in the state also destroyed seven clusters of dry-season Cannabis Sativa farms in the Okpuje forest along the banks of the Ose River totaling 3,124998 hectares.

Babafemi quoted the NDLEA president, a retired brigadier general. Buba Marwa praised the working relationship between NDLEA and other security agencies in the country.

Marwa instructed the officers and men of the MMIA, FCT and Edo not to rest on their oars.
