Ahmed flag-off cancer screening for female civil servants in Kwara

Mrs Omolewa Ahmed, wife of Kwara Governor’s foundation, Life Empowers Anchors Hope (LEAH) has flagged-off ‘Health check/screening for breast and cervical cancer for female civil servants in Kwara.

Dr Aiyesekan Ade, Head of Health Initiative of LEAH, who spoke during a press conference, at the flag-off campaign on cancer screening for female civil servant, said it was a collaborative efforts with the state government.

He said the exercise will afford them the opportunity to know their health status in order to seek help early.

“Statistics showed cervical cancer kills a woman in Nigeria every hour, which is about 8000 deaths in a year, while breast cancer is the most common malignancy in Nigeria.

“These deadly scourge kills over 25,000 women annually in Nigeria, with risk of one in every 25 women,” he said.

Ade also disclosed that records of tertiary hospitals in Ilorin, statistics from 2011 to 2015 showed significance prevalence of breast, prostrate, cervical, liver and colorectal cancers.

According to him, there is alarming prevalence of hepatitis B which is three times more infectious than HIV.

Also speaking at the conference, Dr Asiata Saka, Kwara Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development said the government realized that a healthy workforce is required for good governance.

She said women were targeted because they are the tight link to the family structure and must be health at all times to care for the family.

Ayinke described civil service as the engine room of government and necessary tool for good governance.
