May Day: Akeredolu vows not to revive dead industries in Ondo

Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu of Ondo State
The Ondo State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, has vowed not to revive any dead industry in the state, rather, his administration would begin new industries.

Specifically, he said a new glass industry will be established in the state to replace the dead Oluwa Glass Industry.

Akeredolu stated this while addressing the workers in the state during the celebration of 2017 May Day in Akure, the state capital on Monday.

He stated that the equipments at the Oluwa Glass were obsolete but the new glass industry to be established would make use of modern equipment and would be able to employ about 10,000 people.

He said, “We want to begin reforestation in the state and another glass industry would be established that will employ not less than 10,000 people.

“There is a dire need for us all, particularly workers in this state, to start thinking out of the box on how to diversify our economy from the oil dependence into agriculture, entrepreneurship and industrialisation in order to boost our Internally Generated Revenue.”

While assuring the workers of regular salaries, the governor said he would not fight the workers in the state and workers too should be diligent at work.

In his speech, the state chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Mr. Soladoye Ekundayo urged the governor to find solution to the crisis rocking the Ondo State House of Assembly to enable the Assembly pass the 2017 budget.

He ‎noted that the crisis was affecting the passage of the budget.

He also charged the state government to embark on aggressive IGR drive.

“In doing this, we are not saying the people should be over-taxed but the government should look inward and expand its revenue base.” Ekundayo charged.
