Amotekun has already reduced crime rates in South West -Group
A youth group, Oduduwa Development Initiative, (ODI), has said that the rate of kidnappings and killings, among other crimes have reduced in the South West since the security outfit code-named Amotekun was launched recently by the governors of the region.
The group therefore appealed to the federal government to approve the initiative to support the efforts of the police and other security agencies in tackling the increasing rate of insecurity and threats to national unity by insurgents and armed bandits in the country.
ODI, in a statement issued by its president, Ambassador Akinyele Olasunbo, on Thursday in Abuja, commended the South West governors for the launch of Amotekun, saying the initiative couldn’t have come at a better time than now.
According to the group, Amotekun is not different from the Hisbah Commission and civilian JTF in Borno State in some Northern part of the country that have the assistance of the conventional security agencies.
“ODI hereby commend the governors of the South West states for the commencement of Operation Amotekun. We have watched with concern the deterioration of the security situation of our region, with the attendant loss of lives and property.
“We have seen how our roads have become death traps; how our brothers and sisters living in other regions of Nigeria became afraid of going home for fear of being attacked or kidnapped.
“We have watched with worry how our brothers and sisters, our parents and grandparents, our uncles and aunties living at home were now afraid so much that they could no longer sleep with both eyes closed in their own homes or in their farms.
“And just when we thought we must act to end these serial killings and kidnapping in the zone, our governors, the Aare Ona Kakanfo, Chief Ganiyu Adams, and elders of our land, finally launched Operation Amotekun about seven months after it was conceptualised.
“ODI is in full support of the South West governors and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland and National Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress, for this laudable move, especially as it has shown that since the launch of Amotekun few weeks ago, criminal activities such as kidnappings, invasion of farmland and other social vices are gradually going into oblivion,” the group stated.
It, therefore, called on the Houses of Assembly in the region to pass Amotekun into law like it was done in the North over similar initiatives, noting that this would continue to complement the conventional security agencies for the safety of the citizens.
