ASUU Begins Talks With FG Over Ongoing Strike

Date:

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun negotiations with the Federal Government over its ongoing industrial action.

This was disclosed in Strike Bulletin No. 2, issued by the National Strike Coordinating Committee (NSCC) and signed by Dr. Christopher Piwuna at the weekend.

The development follows ASUU’s declaration of a two-week warning strike last Monday, which has since disrupted academic activities across Nigeria’s public universities.

According to the bulletin, the union said its members remain united and resolute as discussions continue, noting that progress has been recorded in several key areas.

ASUU listed some of these as the release of third-party deductions, payment of promotion arrears, and the mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA). It also cited advances in resolving issues relating to the confiscation of the University of Abuja land and the alleged victimisation of members at Kogi State University (KSU), Lagos State University (LASU), and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

“Our members have shown exemplary commitment to the struggle. We must remain united and resolute in the few days ahead,” the union stated.

The two-week warning strike, which began last Monday, is scheduled to end next week Monday, pending the outcome of the negotiations.
