The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that a two-week nationwide warning strike will proceed as planned unless the Federal Government addresses its demands by October 13, 2025. The strike notice follows a two-week ultimatum issued last week, calling on the government to implement the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement and resolve other outstanding issues.
National ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, delivered the warning during the Orientation/Leadership Training at the ASUU branch of Niger Delta University in Amassoma, Bayelsa State. He emphasized that the union’s decision on the warning strike is final and will not change unless the government meets its demands.
“The warning strike has been issued, and we will embark on it by midnight on Monday. After the two weeks, we will meet to decide when to begin an indefinite strike if the issues remain unresolved,” Piwuna said.
He noted that the strike is not sudden but the result of years of unresolved negotiations. “The issues, including re-negotiation of our 2009 documents, have lingered for years. We have given the government sufficient time, but they have failed to respond,” he added.
The union’s planned action signals escalating tension between ASUU and the Federal Government, with implications for academic activities across Nigeria’s universities if the demands remain unmet.
