A medical expert, Dr Sulyman Zakariya, has warned against high salt intake and fatty foods to avoid hypertension-related ailments.

Zakariya gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ilorin.

According to him, most seasonings and junk foods are salty and fatty, thus causing hypertension.

Zakariya  advised the public to undergo regular medical check-ups, engage in physical exercise and consume fruits and vegetables moderately.

“About 20 per cent of world adults are hypertensive while 70 per cent of Nigerian adult population suffer from hypertension and related illnesses.

“Uncontrolled high blood pressure can injure or kill, that is why it is called “the silent killer” because it has no symptoms.

“One in three adults has high blood pressure; yet, many people don’t know they have it.

“So it is important to have your doctor check your blood pressure regularly,’’ he said.
