COVID-19: FG warned against re-opening of schools

The federal government has been urged to use digital technology to enhance teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The outgoing Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Professor Taofeek Ibrahim, who spoke to journalists in Ilorin on Thursday said: “It is not yet safe to reopen schools because of inadequate safety infrastructure in the country.”

The varsity don noted that Al-Hikmah University’s academic programmes were not affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

He added that the school had run online courses and organized exams for its students.

He said: “Our academic programmes are not affected by covid 19. We run online courses as if students are on campus and examinations were conducted, using our ICT infrastructure, eg zoom and WhatsApp platforms, backed up with voice note. It yielded positively for us.

Professor Ibrahim, a professor of Epidemiology and Disease control urged government to follow the trend and adopt the use of digital technology to teach students while staying in the comfort of their homes.

He explained that the teachers can open a platform through which the time table, lectures and other instructionl materials could be uploaded on various platforms online, to encourage learning and examination conduct.

With the rise in number of affected persons, the university don urged Nigerians to be patient with the present situation and support government effort to flatten the curves on the pandemic.

He also appealed to parents to encourage their children to use the opportunity of this break to study their books.
