Professor Yahaya Jimoh, the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, University of Ilorin has called on engineers to design highway bridges in line with Nigerian transportation policies.

Jimoh made the call on Tuesday in Ilorin, when he presented a paper titled: “The guiding metrics for the planning of highway bridges” at a workshop on bridge building and engineering, held at the University of Ilorin.

The Professor of Civil Engineering said that respect for transport policies was important for planning protocols for highway bridges.

He advised that such designs had to reflect the planning philosophy of the transportation facility.

According to the don, an ideal bridge must satisfy the three key requirements of economy, which includes choice of spans to assure least construction cost, serve the intended functions of safety and convenience, and architectural elegancy and aesthetics.

Jimoh said that highway bridges were not purely classical structural engineering problem, and that this belief might have accounted for deficient engineering and procurement process even in simpler drainage designs, not to talk of the highway bridges.

According to him, many engineers believe that the design of a culvert begins and ends with the reinforcement design, without the due consideration for the hydraulics of the conveyance and the stability of the earth structures.

The don, however, expressed hope that the practice of highway bridge in Nigeria would require the desired impetus as a beneficial consequence of the workshop.
