Dr. Zawaya emerges winner of 2022 NMA President’s Cup Golf Tourney

The tournament was held at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.

Amaechi Chigbo took home the award for best net in the category after playing from the 13 handicap with 87 gross and an impressive 74 net.

Dr. Joyce Barber, former National President of the Nigerian Medical Women’s Association and organizer of the event, said the tournament was in honor of outgoing NMA President Dr. Innocent Ujah.

Barber said it was also a way to ensure Nigerian doctors were fit.

She said that since the inaugural edition of the NMA President’s Cup Golf Tournament in 2019, the doctors’ health has really improved.

“Doctors are exercising a lot more now and we’ve continued to get the message out that doctors need to be well first before they can treat others.

“You cannot offer what you do not have. You have to be in good health before you can sit down and talk to patients with conviction about the need for exercise.

“Golf is for all ages and for all people. It doesn’t take up much time and as you get involved, you exercise your whole body; mind, soul and spirit.

`You are also in tune with nature as it unfolds in a clean and friendly environment while interacting with other people, which is also very important,’ he said.

Barber said a total of 120 players participated in the tournament with nearly 50 doctors from across the country battling it out for honors in the different categories.

“This is the second edition since COVID-19 prevented us from holding the tournament in the last two years.

“We are having the second edition right now in honor of our president before he leaves office in the next few months.

“I dare say that the doctors officially contributed to making this work.

“Our president is our mirror and the goal is to exhibit it today to show that this is what doctors are made of,” he said.

Ujah said he was very honored and surprised that such an elaborate plan was being put together in his honor by Golfers Group (MGG).

“This is indeed a show and a testament to the values ​​they place on Nigerian doctors and I am very honored and proud.

“We will continue to dedicate our lives to the health service of Nigerians now more than ever,” he said.

reports that in the men’s medical category 2 (for handicap 19-28), E. Okundaye playing at handicap 25 with a gross of 106 and a net of 81 finished as the best net in the category.

While Amlai Mamman playing handicap 26 with a gross of 108 and a net of 82 finished as the first runner-up.

Dr. Abdulsalami Nasidi went home with the Best Gross Award initiated by Dr. Peter Nmadu in honor of the late Dr. Lovett Lawson.

In the medical ladies category, Dr. Mimi Osamuonyi won the best net award after playing against the 28 handicap with a net score of 127 gross and net 99.

Dr. Sewuese Bitto, who played with the 36 handicap, settled for second place with 144 gross and 108 net.

Medical veterans were not left out as former Minister of Health Tim Menakaya won the best net award in the men’s category after playing against handicap 28 with a gross score of 107 and net 79.

While Dr. Joyce Barber playing with the 29 handicap won the best net in the Medical Veteran Ladies category with 114 gross and 85 net.
