Edo Governor Swears In 19 Commissioners, Warns Against Corruption

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo on Tuesday swore in 19 new commissioners, along with several chairmen and members of boards and commissions, urging them to uphold integrity and reject corrupt practices.

The ceremony took place at the Government House in Benin City and was attended by Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Chief Lateef Fagbemi, Secretary to the State Government Musa Ikilor, Chief of Staff Alhaji Gani Audu, and other top officials, according to a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.

Okpebholo emphasised that all appointments were based strictly on merit, reminding the appointees that their roles are a call to public service, not rewards or patronage.

“Your nominations did not come as a reward or patronage, but as a call to serve the people of Edo State,” he said. “This administration came into office on the promise of practical governance to touch the lives of our people directly.”

The governor stressed that his administration prioritizes service delivery and tangible results over propaganda, urging commissioners and board members to perform their duties diligently.

“While I congratulate you on your deserved elevation, I must warn that your appointment is not for personal enrichment,” Okpebholo said. “You are expected to display discipline, teamwork, and a shared sense of purpose. Loyalty to the people of Edo State must guide your actions.”

He added that the goal of his administration is to rebuild and reposition Edo State for sustainable growth, demonstrating that government can effectively serve its citizens.

Speaking on behalf of the appointees, Ebea Odianonsen thanked the governor for his confidence and pledged full commitment to supporting the administration’s developmental agenda.

“We pledge to support your vision and ensure that all promises to the people of Edo State are fully realized,” Odianonsen said, assuring that commissioners and board members would work tirelessly to advance effective governance and political stability.

The swearing-in brings the total number of commissioners in Edo State to 29, following the earlier appointment of 10 commissioners.
