EFCC to ADC “We’ll Investigate Anyone Ruling or Opposition, No Exceptions”

Date:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has responded to allegations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that its investigations into opposition figures are politically motivated, insisting that it operates under a strictly non-partisan mandate.

In a strongly worded statement issued on August 12, 2025, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede dismissed the ADC’s claims as “self-serving, diversionary, and idle.”

“If I am not condemned for investigating both former and serving strong ruling party governors and ministers, I should not be condemned for also investigating opposition figures,” Olukoyede said.

The ADC had alleged that opposition politicians were receiving “politically motivated” EFCC summonses based on reactivated old cases rather than new evidence. The EFCC countered that there is no such thing as a “stale” corruption case, stressing that every credible allegation must be investigated regardless of timing.

Court records, the Commission said, show that prominent figures across political lines, including members of the ruling APC, are facing prosecution for alleged financial crimes. Several serving governors of different political affiliations are also under active EFCC investigation.

The agency maintained that it will not be “blackmailed” into revealing details of ongoing probes and urged political parties to “focus on their partisan activities” rather than obstructing anti-corruption efforts.

“Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There are no sacred cows, protected interests, or partisan considerations in our work. The only immunity against investigation is accountability and probity,” the statement read.

The EFCC urged Nigerians to disregard politically charged statements aimed at undermining the fight against corruption and distracting from what it called “the pillage of the national treasury.
