Enugu doctors join nationwide strike
The Association of Resident Doctors, section of Enugu State University Hospital (ESUTH), said it had joined its national body in launching an indefinite strike.
The association’s president, ESUTH branch, Dr Chima Edoga, made the disclosure in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) in Enugu on Friday.
According to him, the strike is explained by the non-payment of the salaries of some resident doctors in hospitals belonging to the federal government.
“The reasons for our association’s strike include the non-payment of salaries for some of our colleagues in federal government health facilities.
“Especially those who are household officers, who are the lowest cadre of doctors.
“In addition, some doctors were recently hired in December but have not yet been integrated into the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS),” he said.
He said the federal government had yet to implement the requested upward revision of the current risk allowance that it had agreed with the association.
Edoga noted that there was no payment of insurance packages to family members of doctors who died from COVID-19 infection and other infectious diseases.
He applauded Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, however, for his efforts to pay doctors’ salaries and modernize health facilities in the state.
He called on the state government to employ more doctors as many doctors were leaving government health facilities in droves. (NOPE)
