LISBON — Former Sporting CP right-back Virgílio Lopes has issued a warning to Arsenal ahead of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash in April, highlighting the Portuguese side’s ability to upset any opponent in Europe’s elite competition.
Lopes pointed to Sporting’s remarkable comeback against Bodø/Glimt in the Round of 16 as proof of their resilience and determination. The former defender reminded Arsenal that Sporting has previously defeated European giants such as Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.
“Sporting has the quality and conditions to beat any of these teams,” Virgílio said in an interview with Metro. “We have already beaten Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and several clubs, and now it is another one. It is a matter of having the same spirit from the Bodø/Glimt comeback in these games.”
He added, “In terms of quality, we are very similar, so if we work harder than Arsenal, we will have an advantage.” Lopes’ comments underline Sporting’s confidence as they prepare for one of the most high-profile ties of the Champions League quarter-finals.
With both teams boasting talented squads, the encounter promises to be a tightly contested clash, and Lopes believes Sporting’s experience and fighting spirit could be decisive against the Premier League leaders.
