Excessive thinking causes hypertension—- UNILORIN Don

The former Provost of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, Prof A. B. O. Omotoso, has identified too much thinking as the cause of hypertension rather than the commonly held notion that it is stress that causes the disease.

The Professor of Medicine made this observation on Monday while delivering a lecture at the end of the year get-together of the Association of University Professional Secretaries (AUPS) held at the Dam Site of the University where both the Vice-Chancellor, Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali, and the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Obafemi, were appointed the Grand Patron and Patron of the association, respectively.

In the lecture, Prof. Omotoso urged professional secretaries not to sit too long at their tables as this can cause damages to their body. He stressed that there are a lot of risk around that can cause damages to the body, many of which, are not curable but can be controlled.

He advised secretaries to stretch their legs while using computers to allow easy flow of blood round their bodies. He also urged them to take their eyes away from the screen every 20 minutes and look far away so as to prevent eye damages.

Declaring the event open, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. A.Y Abdulkareem, said that the objective of the Association goes beyond enhancing ICT skills but also promoting the profession of secretaries.

Prof. Abdulkareem described Secretaries at the University as the brain box of the administration. He pointed out that from their various offices, activities of the University can be appraised and assessed, noting that with several on-the-job trainings like the monthly seminar being organised by the Association, a lot of impact will be made on the careers of members of AUPS.

While appreciating the gesture, Prof AbdulKareem who spoke on behalf of the awardees promised to continue to support the association in their drive to move the University of Ilorin to greater heights.

Earlier in his welcome address, the President of AUPS, Mr. Olu Mark, said that since the inception of the incumbent administration, he has been creating different workshops for both the teaching and non-teaching staff of the University.

Mr. Mark who also noted that since the establishment of the university, no administration has invested so much time and resources on training and retraining programmes for all categories of staff like the present administration is doing.

The Registrar, Mr. E. D. Obafemi, while thanking AUPS members for their cooperation, promised to support them and other staff of the University, urging them to support and work with whoever takes over from him.
