The Fadama III Additional Financing (AF) has approved 91 hectare of land to cassava farmers in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State to boost production in the state.

Mr Gbenga Arokoyo, Rural Institution Development Specialist in National  Fadama  Project, Abuja stated this on Thursday during  a monitoring  visit to Ajosepo cluster farm in Ore.

Arokoyo said that the gesture was to liberate farmers from poverty and to ensure food security in the  state.

He said that Fadama III project was aimed at empowering farmers to do agriculture business.

“Actually we are here for midterm review (MTR) in the state, but with what I saw today the farmers are doing well.

“We are thinking of what else to add so that it will add value to what they are doing here to help them assert greater benefit.

“In 2016 cropping season, Fadama III project approved 91 hectares of land for cultivation of cassava here in Ore.

“Fadama III project also promises to install Gari processing mill and construction of 7km feeder roads for the farmers this year.

“And if the road is approved, the fear that how to get out our product will be a thing of past,” he said.

Also speaking, Mrs Bakare Jumoke, Community Development Officer, Fadama III Ondo State Chapter said that the state supported two value chain of cassava and low land rice production.

Bakare said that over 50 hectares of cassava had been planted by farmers out of 91 hectares being approved in 2016.

“About 50 hectares of cassava have been planted and 41hectares is yet to be planted. Meanwhile we have over 200 hectares available here in Ore cluster farm.

” We have 91 farmers already in this area and the area can accommodate 200 farmers because the program was designed for one person per hectare.

“So we have room for many people that has interest in the program because the second phase of the program will start immediately after the Easter festival,” she said.

Bakare noted that some farmers also benefited from the low land rice production in the state.

“We have two clusters that already harvested their rice, one at Ogbese and Awule production cluster while over 62 hectares of rice have been harvested in this last year cropping season.

“We can say that up to 50 per cent of rice eating in Ondo State is from Fadama rice especially the local rice,” she said.

Mr Esekiel Ibitoye, Chairman Ore Cluster Cassava Production appreciated the Fadama III AF for the opportunity given to the farmers in the area.

Ibitoye, however, appealed to Fadama III to keep to their promises to instal Gari processing mill and construction of 7km feeder roads.

“What we need now is road, our road is bad and we need processing mill either small or big so that our cassava will not be wasted and not to have glut,” Ibitoye said.
