Federal Polytechnic Ukana Enforces Zero Tolerance for Cultism

Date:

The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ukana, in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, has restated its zero-tolerance stance on cultism, examination malpractice and other forms of antisocial behaviour.

The Rector, Dr. Eduma Essien, gave the warning on Tuesday while addressing newly admitted students during the institution’s 12th orientation exercise held at the main campus.

Essien cautioned students against actions capable of tarnishing the image of the polytechnic, urging them to familiarise themselves with the institution’s policies, rules and regulations, which she described as essential to academic success.

ā€œWe have zero tolerance for cultism and examination malpractice because we want to produce graduates who can confidently defend their certificates anywhere,ā€ she said, adding that discipline remains central to the institution’s values.

The rector explained that beyond academic qualifications, students would also acquire practical competencies through the polytechnic’s mandatory skills acquisition programme, noting that the skills would be certified and internationally recognised.

According to her, the institution is committed to producing graduates equipped with knowledge, skills and character to excel both within and beyond the academic environment.

She encouraged students to cooperate with lecturers by diligently completing assignments, describing mutual respect as key to effective teaching and learning.

Essien also advised students to report any form of sexual harassment or pressure from lecturers to the management or the Anti-Sexual Harassment Unit, stressing that the institution prohibits the exchange of gifts for grades.

She further announced a ban on the sale of handouts, directing students to purchase only approved textbooks, and assured them of a safe, disciplined and academically conducive learning environment.

The orientation programme also featured presentations by key officials of the polytechnic, including the Registrar, Idhigu Lucky; the Bursar, Dr. Emmanuel Esomonu; and the Polytechnic Librarian, Ehikioya Uduebor, among others.
