FG to provide 2,000 households affordable houses in FCT – Minister
Sambo said this when he made a one-day inspection visit to a Public Private Partnership housing project on Monday in Gwagwalada, FCT.
He said that the housing project was aimed at providing decent accommodation to 2,000 families and said that “it is a laudable project that the government will try to achieve by 2022.”
According to him, since independence, the country’s population increased from 40 million to 200 million in 2022 and is projected to increase to about 450 million by 2050.
“All these people must be provided with houses; it is a constitutional and fundamental requirement for the government to provide decent and affordable housing to its citizens, it is a conventional right.
“And it is a high priority agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to provide decent and affordable housing for the affluent masses of Nigeria, especially in the context of rural-urban migration that we have today.
“It is the responsibility of every government, even more so this government, to make sure that affordable housing is provided to its citizens,” Mua’zu said.
Regarding his assessment of the quality of the work, he expressed his satisfaction with the road and drainage infrastructure, both in terms of quality and speed.
He said that the project, which started in December 2021, would be available to the public.
According to him, it may be necessary to take a look at the design to cover the cost of construction materials.
“One of the challenges other than financing is that we have to look at the technology to accelerate development to make sure houses are affordable in the context of the rising cost of building materials,” he said.
The Director of Public Private Partnership, Ms. Abimbola Asein, FMWH, said that the Affordable Housing and Management Development Initiative, the land covers approximately 113 hectares for the 2,000 housing units.
“The initiative is to provide affordable housing for Nigerians and the first phase, which is the construction of the infrastructure, is about 25 percent complete.”
Asein was optimistic that, once completed, it would be available to low- and middle-income Nigerians at an affordable cost.
According to her, there will be space for one, two and three-bedroom apartments, depending on affordability and process.
