FG urged to fund Pharmaceutical researches amidst COVID-19

The Federal Government has been urged to intensify efforts in funding researches in the Pharmaceutical Industries, especially in the race for COVID-19 vaccines.

The Chairman of Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, (PSN), in Kwara State, Mr Otelaja Adejuwon, said Nigerian Pharmacists are conducting extensive research as regards COVID-19 management.

He however observed that these researches is hampered by lack of funding, adding that the Federal Government has a lot to do because most of all the agencies are underfunded.

He said: “Pharmacists are at the forefront of cutting edge research in this country, we have one of the best brains of Pharmacists in various spheres, aside from those in the Universities and Research institute.

“When government fund these researches very well, we will have innovations that can lead to more patents that will generate foreign exchange for the country because there is complaint that foreign exchange is depleting.”

Adejuwon observed that Nigeria is blessed with a lot of human capital, adding that government should harness this through support.

According to him, the CBN has promised funding on COVID-19, however observing that bureaucratic bottleneck is still a challenge in accessing.

The PSN Chairman commended the Federal and State Government in their fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, saying they are doing their best while urging th m to do more.

He also urge people not to relent on the COVID-19 protocols, in order to further flatten the curve of the pandemic.

“The PSN would continue to support the government in engaging and sensitizing the public on the necessary preventive measures on COVID-19,” he added.
