First Bank Hosts Landmark China-Africa Interbank Association Forum

Date:

  • Forum to spotlight Nigeria’s role in China-Africa economic relations.
  • Theme focuses on modernisation, trade, and economic diversification.

First Bank of Nigeria is set to host the first-ever China-Africa Interbank Association (CAIBA) Forum in Nigeria, a significant step toward strengthening economic ties and fostering investments between China and Africa.

Previously held exclusively in Beijing, this year’s forum will spotlight Nigeria’s critical role in the rapidly expanding China-Africa economic partnership. Themed “Joining Hands to Advance Modernisation and Strengthening China-Africa Trade, Industrialisation and Economic Diversification,” the event will be co-hosted by the China Development Bank.

The forum will bring together financial institutions, policymakers, and industry leaders from both regions to promote knowledge sharing, networking, and deal-making opportunities. The goal is to drive cooperative efforts that support sustainable development and mutual growth.

FirstBank’s Leadership Role

Olusegun Alebiosu, Chief Executive of FirstBank Group, expressed the bank’s pride in hosting this historic event.

“We are honoured to host this pivotal event that fosters dialogue and collaboration between Chinese and African financial institutions,” Alebiosu said. “This forum reinforces our commitment to bridging the gap between Africa and China, catalysing economic growth and development. The selection of FirstBank as host is a testament to our rich legacy, deep expertise in African markets, and 130-year history of empowering businesses and communities to thrive.”

Established in 2018, the China-Africa Interbank Association aims to close funding gaps in Africa by enhancing financial cooperation in industrialisation, infrastructure development, and poverty alleviation. Its 16-member banks include FirstBank, China Development Bank, and other major African institutions such as ABSA Bank, West African Development Bank, and the Development Bank of South Africa.

Forum Highlights and Participation

The CAIBA Forum will feature a robust agenda, including a plenary session, keynote speeches, trade exhibitions, and networking events. The forum will also host high-profile speakers and participants, including:

  • Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima
  • The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Yemi Cardoso
  • The Minister of Trade, Industry, and Investment
  • The MD of China Development Bank
  • Ambassadors from CAIBA member countries
  • Representatives from the China-Africa Development Fund

Financial and business leaders such as Dr. Abiodun Adedipe, Wole Adeniyi (CEO of Stanbic IBTC), and Ugo Obi-Chukwu (Publisher of Nairametrics) will also contribute to discussions on economic collaboration, innovation, and investment opportunities.

Driving China-Africa Partnerships

FirstBank’s extensive network across Sub-Saharan Africa, the UK, and China positions it as a strategic partner in facilitating trade and investment flows between the two regions. Its expertise in financial inclusion, trade finance, and corporate banking will complement the China Development Bank’s focus on sustainable solutions.

This forum is expected to provide a dynamic platform for fostering partnerships, catalysing trade, and driving economic transformation across Africa, underscoring the importance of a stronger China-Africa alliance.

Meanwhile, ROYAL NEWS reported that the First Bank of Nigeria announced a name change from FBN Holdings Plc and FBN Holdings to First Holdco Plc and FirstHoldco, respectively.
